All About Type Tool

Another fine day to continue our Photoshop Learning Tutorials! Well, today I thought of talking about the Type Tool. Type tool is used when you want to add a text to your project or work on letters. Unlike any other typing softwares you are familiar with, Phtoshop Type Tool enable you not only to write or in other words, add a text but it also provides you the chance to change it, modify it and enhance it. When I say change it, modify it and enhance it, this does not only mean the usual bolding, italics fonts etc. etc. etc. but other features like Warp text, individual letter modification etc. So without further ado, let's start working on Type Tool.

 Step 1

On your left hand side Tool Menu, there is a T letter. That symbolises the Type Tool. Select it and click on your any place of your canvas. At the same time, you can notice that you get a new layer with T which indicates the Type Layer. Once you type the text you want, you can double click on this T icon in the Layer Palette to hilight the text.

Step Two: Changing the Options

Click on the image to Enlarge

You might have also noticed the change in Options Bar at the top into something like this. (picture showing Options Bar) In here, you can change the options for your text.

1. The first one from the left side is a T with two arrows. This is to change the text orientation.

2. Next one is a cage with a drop down menu to change the font type.

3. Next cage indicates the style changes you can apply like bold, regular etc.

4. Next sign is to change the font size.

5. After font size, you can notice two simple a sign. This is anti alising method. There a drop down menu from which you can change the sharpness, smoothness of the text.

6. Next set of lines are the align adjustments. I'm sure you are familiar with those.

7. After adjustments, indicated there is a colour box. This is to change the colour of your text.

8. Another T letter with a curve at the bottom is shown next to the colour box. It's to create warped text. You can add curvatures, banner curves and many other different curves and shapes to your text.

9. Last icon in the Options Bar is Toggle the Character and Paragraph Panel.

From here, you can again change the font type, colour, bse line shift, line spacing (Set the leading which is normally set to auto), character spacing or kerning between two characters, vertical and horizontal scales of the text or paragraphs. Also this one comes handy when you need to add characters like dates which require superscript.

If you see closer, you will see a set of T letters at the bottom above the two cages. These starting from the left side functions to Faux Bold, Faux Italics, All Caps, Small Caps, Superscript, Subscript, Underline and Strike through.

In this there's another column named Paragraph. In Paragraph column you can change the align adjustments, Indents of the margins.

You can open this Toggle the Character and Paragraph Panel from Window on the Menu bar. Click on Window and select Character from it. It opens up the Toggle the Character and Paragraph Panel.

You can just select a single letter or two and change its options. This is really an advantage because you can work on individual letters if you want without changing the whole line of text.
